What is the EMsculpt?
The EMsculpt device is used for non-invasive muscle building through the use of hypertrophy induced by a magnetic field. The technology, high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM), is relatively new to the medical world but has been approved by the FDA for muscle strengthening. The safety and efficacy have been proven by various scientific studies using advanced imaging technologies like MRI and CT. Studies has shown an average of 16% increase in muscle mass
Before and After EMsculpt
1 Month Post-treatment
16% increase in muscle mass
19% reduction in adipose tissue (fat)
11% improvement in Diastasis Recti
6 Months Post-treatment
19% increase in muscle mass
23% reduction in adipose tissue (fat)
18% improvement in Diastasis Recti
How does EMsculpt work?
EMsculpt uses a focused electromagnetic field to induce powerful muscle contractions. As the muscle tissue is forced to adapt, it responds by strengthened its underlying fibrous structures. The entire process is similar to the natural process that occurs when you voluntarily contract muscles during exercise or weight training, except the EMsculpt can actually induce supramaximal contractions which are larger than what a person can induce voluntarily. Such muscles toning and strengthening can be used in the context of physical therapy to supplement other strengthening and stretching techniques.
What is the muscle strengthening procedure like?
The non-invasive procedure involves securing a pad over the intended muscles to treat and then letting the device induce muscle contractions in the area for 30 minutes. The contractions feel like an intense workout, but many people can relax during the session. Some people find the sensation similar to other muscle stimulation therapies. In general, a treatment plan includes 4 30-minute sessions spaced 2-3 days apart; however, each person may require other variations and supplemental treatments.
Another great aspect of this treatment is that there is no downtime.
Muscle building treatments have been shown to help with general body contouring and fat reduction, but it also has uses in physical therapy treatment for:
- weak muscles
- damaged muscles
- diastasis recti
- muscle building and toning
- abs, buttocks, arms, legs
- fat reduction
- abs, buttocks, arms, legs
Muscle strengthening for low back pain
Back pain can be a result of many different things: overuse, injuries to the muscles, ligaments, and discs that support the spine, muscle strain, bad posture, and other issues and conditions. Without proper management, such issues can lead to an overall imbalance in the spine which can lead to constant tension in areas of the back that can lead to further injury or re-injury. So how to you recover from such issues? You must strengthen your lumbar and core muscles that make up the supportive structure in your back and abdomen.
The EMsculpt and EMsella devices help bring the benefits of muscle strengthening exercises, without the strain and potential to aggravate your existing back pain. Many lower back exercises concentrate on strengthening the abdominal muscles in an effort to bring stabilization to the spine. Muscle strengthening treatments can be combined with various exercises to help alleviate common low back pain.
How does EMsculpt help with back pain?
The musculoskeletal system is complex. Our locomotive abilities depend on strength and stability throughout our entire body. Strengthening specific muscles in one part of the system can compliment the muscles and stability in other areas. This is the foundation for using the EMsculpt to strengthen not only the abdominal area, but also target the glutes, quadriceps, and calves. Lower-body strength will lead to a stable foundation for muscles in the torso and back. This is especially important for individuals who have suffered spinal injuries and cannot perform lower body exercises adequately.
Risks & side effects of EMsculpt treatment
So far studies have shown that there are no safety concerns when using EMsculpt. Because it is a new technology, relatively little is known about any long-term effects that electromagnetic wave have on the structures of the body. However, due to the nature of the muscle strengthening process, you could expect the following:
- muscle fatigue
- temporary muscle spasm
