What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma, more commonly known as PRP, is a highly concentrated serum consisting of platelets and growth factors that stimulate natural healing and regeneration of tissues, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Platelets normally circulate in the blood stream and are responsible for clotting and initiating the body’s healing response in an acute injury.

How does PRP therapy work?

The serum used in PRP therapy is derived from the patients own body and is 100% natural. Many acute injuries do not heal adequately, leading to chronic pain and even loss of function over time. By harnessing PRP from the patient’s own blood, the serum can be re-injected back into damaged tissue to help with the healing process and improve overall function. As a result, the tissue beings to heal and function can be restored.

What is the procedure like?

The procedure is minimally invasive and involves taking blood from the patient in order to extract the PRP serum. At Genesis, we have the latest medical equipment and techniques to ensure the serum reaches maximum potency. The PRP serum is then injected into the site of injured tissue, muscle, or tendon. This is typically performed under the image guidance of ultrasound and/or fluoroscopy. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy has proven to be a safe an effective method to treat pain and jump-starting the body’s natural healing process.
